• Cherokee Communications partners with other ConnectHome members to expand economic opportunity in local community.

Durant, OK – The White House announced today that Cherokee Communications will partner with the White House and Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma in support of the newly announced ConnectHome Initiative. ConnectHome is program of the Department of Housing and Urban Development to bridge the digital divide in America and bring as many homes online as possible.

The pilot program of ConnectHome is set to launch in 27 cities and in the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, providing Internet connections to 425 local homes as well as education efforts on maximizing these new opportunities.

“We are proud to be a part of ConnectHome and bridging the digital divide in our community,” said Cherokee Communications President Jenny Sanchez. “This is an exciting time for our hometown and the people we serve.”

President Barack Obama is scheduled to announce White House support for ConnectHome today at 5:45pm (CST). Live stream will be available at www.whitehouse.gov/live.

Family-owned Cherokee Communications was founded as Cherokee Telephone Company in 1956. Cherokee connected the first modern telephone network in Calera, OK and was the first in Oklahoma to offer DSL Internet to all of their customers. Today, Cherokee offers Internet, digital voice and television service as well as FiberNow, the area’s first fiber-to-the-home Internet connection.
